Magic Kingdom Offers New Kids Menu Items

While some little ones are content with mac ‘n cheese or a burger, other young guests have a, well, more sophisticated approach to dining. Four Magic Kingdom Park table-service restaurants are adding some delicious new dishes just for kids for ages 3 to 9. At Tony’s Town Square, look for a steak skewer “spiedini” with roasted sweet potato fries and fresh fruit (spiedini refers to cubes of meat cooked on a skewer, an Italian specialty). Also at Tony’s, a grilled cheese sandwich on multigrain bread sliced into “dippers” with tomato sauce on the side should appeal to just about any child.

Liberty Tree Tavern is featuring a new barbecued chicken and pineapple flatbread pizza with a side of crisp veggies and apples, or oven-roasted turkey with mashed potatoes, veggies and fruit.

At Cinderella’s Royal Table, youngsters can try the new chicken drumette with rice and broccolini, grilled beef skewers with mashed potatoes and corn, or a chicken pot pie topped with a biscuit crust.

And The Plaza Restaurant has a kids’ plate with grilled chicken slices, cous cous and a fresh fruit skewer. Ah, to be a young ‘un again.

2 Classic Walt Disney World Characters Return for "Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom"

When the new S orcerers of the Magic Kingdom game debuts at Magic Kingdom Park in February, guests might encounter two characters stright out of the 'Disney World Wayback Machine.' Merlin and Mr. Toad reappear as playing cards in this new interactive experience where it is up to guests to defeat Disney villains who are wreaking havoc through the theme park.
In this role-playing game, guests become Merlin’s apprentice sorcerers and embark on a quest to stop more than 20 Disney villains – including Hades and Cruella De Vil – from stealing one of the four shattered pieces of Merlin’s crystal ball. Armed with spells in the form of special cards, guests search for the magic symbols that lead them to villains’ hiding places in Adventureland, Fantasyland, Frontierland, and Main Street, U.S.A. Once there, apprentices use magic keys to reveal a villain’s hideout and use spell cards to stop them in their tracks.According to the game’s developers, the cards really are the secret weapons of the game. There will be 70 different spell cards available and guests will receive five complimentary cards when they play. Each card features a different Disney character that offers a spell unique to him or her. Guests can use more than one card simultaneously, casting multiple spells at a villain at one time.

Some of the cards you may encounter include:

Lumière’s Candle Blast – This card shows Belle’s favorite candlestick spurred on by his loyal ally, Cogsworth.
Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride – This card shows Mr. Toad’s car careening through the underbrush.
Prince Naveen’s Army of Frogs – This card shows Tiana’s prince enchanting his amphibian army to action.
Rafiki’s Wisdom Stick – This card shows Simba’s counselor ready to imbue some knowledge on the enemy’s forehead.

Jennifer Fickley-Baker, Social Media Manager at Disney Parks Blog adds, "I do have some additional details for guests who want to collect or trade these cards. The 70 cards are divided into nine different spell classes, such as Princess cards, Hero cards or Warrior cards. In addition, all cards are marked with one of three designations – a star symbol, which indicates a rare card; a moon symbol, which signifies an uncommon card; and a planet symbol, which indicates a common card."

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom will debut in late February and is included in the cost of theme park admission.

Disney Creative Entertainment has a new Castle show, just in time for Valentine’s Day! Set to debut Feb. 1, this show was inspired by some of the most romantic moments in Disney animation. Cinderella Castle will be covered in red roses for one sequence and turned into a beautiful, star-filled sky for another. During part of the show, spectacular stained glass windows will grace the façades, depicting the stories of Cinderella, Snow White and Belle.

Big Changes Coming to Epcot's Test Track in April 2012

Disney and General Motors have renewed their long-term business relationship with a new multi-year corporate alliance.

As part of the new alliance, GM will be actively involved with Walt Disney Imagineering in the development of a re-imagined, design-centric Test Track experience. The refurbished Test Track will be presented by one of GM’s most famous brands, Chevrolet. As Chevrolet marks its 100^th anniversary, the new alliance agreement enables General Motors to tell its story in new and exciting ways.

Plans call for closing the current GM Test Track in April 2012, with an anticipated opening of Test Track Presented by Chevrolet scheduled for fall 2012.

As part of the re-imagining, the Future World attraction will feature a sleek new “Chevrolet Design Center at Epcot” immersing Guests in the fascinating world of automotive design. Amid upbeat music, engaging media, dramatic lighting and a collection of Chevrolet concept cars and model vehicles, guests themselves will become automotive designers – and peer into the future of personal transportation in the process.

At interactive design and styling workstations, Guests will be able to create their own custom concept vehicles. The adventure will then shift into high gear as Guests buckle into their 6-person “SimCar” ride vehicle and put their design through its paces on the exhilarating hills, switchbacks and straight-aways of the Test Track circuit.

What is One More Disney Day in 2012?

For the first time ever, both the Magic Kingdom Park and Disneyland Park will stay open for 24 hours straight as part of a bi-coastal salute called “One More Disney Day.” From 6 a.m., February 29 to 6 a.m., March 1, 2012, local time, guests can fill the extra day of leap year with a marathon of Disney magic and fun.*

And for 60 days straight – from Jan. 1, 2012 to Feb. 29, 2012 – a daily winner will be chosen in the “Disney Parks One More Disney Day Sweepstakes” to receive a Disney Parks vacation. Walt Disney's Last Photo

The following was posted on December 15th, 2011 by George Savvas, Public Relations Director, Disneyland Resort.

On December 15th some 45 years ago, the world mourned the loss of one of the 20th Century’s greatest visionaries and most beloved figures, Walt Disney. Just a couple months earlier, in the fall of 1966, Walt had publicity photos taken at Disneyland park. Joined by Mickey Mouse at Sleeping Beauty Castle in the Disneyland Fire Department “Engine No. 1,” Walt was photographed by my former colleague, Disneyland Chief Photographer, Renie Bardeau, who retired in 1998. That day, Renie took what would be the final photographs of Walt Disney at Disneyland park.

Prior to his retirement, Renie told the Los Angeles Times, “There is a little story of when I was shooting that particular picture. It was shot on a Rolleiflex, and there are 12 pictures on a roll. I had shot 11 pictures of Walt at different angles… watching for his smile, watching to make sure Mickey was looking the right way, making sure the (castle) spires weren’t hanging out of Mickey’s ears. Anyway, I had shot 11 pictures, and I had said, ‘Thank you, Walt, that’s it.’ He asked me if I was sure, and I told him I was. He then told me that at the Studio we treat film like paper clips. You shoot, shoot, shoot all the film you need because if it’s not in the can, you will never have it. So he asked me to shoot one more. So, I shot one more and he said, ‘That’s fine, thank you, Renie,’ and he walked away.”

Never-Built Walt Disney World Attractions

EPCOT: SWITZERLAND PAVILION

The Switzerland Pavilion at Epcot was proposed to have been built between Italy and Germany in the World Showcase section of the park. It would feature Swiss-themed restaurants, shops and feature an enhanced version of Disneyland's Matterhorn Bobsled attraction. In the Walt Disney World Resort version, Disney Imagineers planned a finale featuring a spinning avalanche tunnel of ice, giving the illusion the sleds were traveling upside down. And this was never built because...?

ENCHANTED SNOW PALACE

Which Disney World attraction are you reminded of here? it's a small world? Maelstrom in the Norway Pavilion? Actually, The Enchanted Snow Palace attraction was proposed in 1977 for Walt Disney World Resort. It was the idea of Marc Davis, a Walt Disney Imagineer who left fingerprints on classic Disney attractions such as The Jungle Cruise, Carousel of Progress, and Pirates of the Caribbean. In this attraction, Davis conceived a a cavernous snow-peaked boat ride through ice as a perfect place to beat the Orlando heat and humidity. While this charming scene of a polar bear and frost fairies provides us and idea of what guests might see on this attraction, no illustrations exist of what the proposed ride vehicles would look like or whether or not this attraction would be built in Magic Kingdom Park, or Epcot.

Ground Breaking on Disney World's Newest Resort Hotel

Construction officially kicked-off this week with a groundbreaking ceremony that included Mickey Mouse, Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts operations, and joint venture partners Silverstein Properties and Dune Real Estate.

When construction is finished, Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World will have 444-rooms, three pools, a “lazy river” and of course, a spa with 18 treatment rooms for you to enjoy. There will be several sport facilities, including tennis courts, a climbing wall and more.

The resort is scheduled to open in 2014.

Cancellation Policy for Walt Disney World Restaurants

To provide consistent Guest service, adjustments will be made to the Walt Disney World® Resort dining cancellation policy beginning on Oct. 26, 2011. At that time, additional table service dining locations will begin using the cancellation policy already in place at select restaurants on property. When booking a reservation at these restaurants, you will be required to provide a credit card to hold a reservation and will be charged $10 per person if a cancellation to this reservation isn’t made at least one day in advance.

This policy will not apply to dining reservations made before Oct. 26, 2011. However, any modifications made to these dining reservations after Oct. 26, 2011, will then be required to provide a credit card to hold the reservation, regardless of what date the reservation was originally booked.

New Resort Coming to Walt Disney World

Take a look at what’s coming to the Golden Oak community at the Walt Disney World Resort. It’s a new Four Seasons resort that’ll have a rooftop restaurant with Magic Kingdom Park views and a few other special touches.

The 444-room hotel will have three pools, a “lazy river” and of course, a spa with 18 treatment rooms. There will be several sport facilities, including tennis courts, a climbing wall and more when construction is completed.

Work begins in a few months with a target opening date of 2014.

Remembering Disney's 15th Anniversary

The showcase of the 15th Anniversary celebration was the introduction of the WDW-GGM (Walt Disney World Gift Giver Machine). This computer awarded birthday gift surprises to guests entering the park every 15 seconds. A variety of prizes such as birthday visors, birthday pins, Walt Disney Pictures videos, Annual Passes and beach towels were awarded daily, and every day one lucky guest won a 1987 Chevy Cavalier. Winning guests received a voucher to order the car (or an S-10 pickup truck, their choice) at their hometown Chevrolet dealer.

A giant topiary birthday cake marked the occasion in the Hub right in front of Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom Park.

This seven-foot-tall cake measured 41 feet in circumference and featured more than 11,000 live plants. The “15” candle on top was 30 inches high and made from Scarletta begonias

The topiary cake was changed with the seasons as chrysanthemums were installed for Thanksgiving and poinsettias for Christmas.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Coming 2012

A new role-playing adventure is coming to Walt Disney World called Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. This is going to be fun – and it’s all happening inside the park. Merlin the magician will recruit guests to become apprentice sorcerers and then help them with maps and clues that show where and how to defeat an army of Disney villains.

Work on this new adventure is already underway. You may notice a few giant crates and even some new spaces showing up throughout Adventureland. They’ll provide early clues to the challenge you’ll face while trying to save the Magic Kingdom.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom is scheduled to debut in early 2012.

Japan Pavilion - Kabuki Cafe Now Open

Important Changes to the 2012 Disney Dining Plans

There are three notable changes announced thus far to the 2012 veriosn for the Disney Dining Plan Options:

The base Disney Dining Plan has added a Refillable Resort Drink Mug for each member of your party to the plan. The mug can be used for unlimited refills of soft drinks, coffee, tea, or hot chocolate at the designated stations at the resort you are staying at. Usually they are located at the food court and by the main pool. You get to keep the mug as a souvenir, but it is only good for free refills for the duration of the trip.
The Quick Service Dining Plan had a reduction in entitlements. Instead of receiving 2 snacks per person per day, you will only receive 1 snack per person per day.
Currently there is not a listing for the Wine Add-on to the Disney Dining Plans. It may be added later or it could be dropped as an option.

2012 Disney Dining Plan
The original and still most popular option is the base Disney Dining Plan. In 2012 this option will get each member of your party the following for each night of your stay:

AAA Gives Another 5 Diamond Award to Victoria & Alberts

Victoria & Albert's at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa has been awarded the AAA Five-Diamond Award, the highest AAA honor for a restaurant. This is the 11th year (first awarded in 2000), and V&A's is the only restaurant in Central Florida and one of only three in Florida, along with L'Escalier and The Restaurant at the Four Seasons, both in Palm Beach. Only 55 restaurants in the U.S., Canada and Mexico made the 2011 list.

The leadership team at Victoria & Albert's are manager and sommelier Israel Perez, chef Scott Hunnel and master pastry Chef Erich Herbitschek.

Two new ways for guests of Walt Disney World Resort hotels to live like their favorite Disney characters are now on sale. Building on the success of Pirate Rooms at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, new “Disney Story Rooms” are now available for guests booking vacations in 2012 – Disney’s Art of Animation Resort and the Royal Guest Rooms at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside.

Opening in early Spring 2012, the Royal Guest Rooms at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside allow princes and princesses of all ages to stay where Disney royalty have stayed. Guests find regal touches left behind by some of their favorite Disney characters like fiber optics special effects above ornately decorated beds with gold and crystal accents; custom linens and drapes; and in-room art and details including princely banners and princess friends. The 512 Royal Guest Rooms start at $189 per night.

Walt Disney World guests also can now book rooms at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, a brand new Walt Disney World Value Resort opening in early Summer 2012. A Closer Look at Main Street USA

Take a closer look at the Emporium on Main Street, U.S.A., one of the original Magic Kingdom Park merchandise landmarks. Like its neighboring shops, it’s themed to an idyllic small town setting of the early 20th century.

If you look closely at the windows alongside the southwest corner Emporium entrance, you’ll see the words, “Osh Popham” named as the proprietor of the happy, bustling shop.

But who is Osh? He’s actually a character played by Oscar-winning actor/singer Burl Ives in the charming 1963 Walt Disney feature film, “Summer Magic,” co-starring Hayley Mills.

In the film, Osh was a shopkeeper, postmaster and good-natured meddler. He helped the struggling Carey family find a new home in the little town of Beulah, Maine.

Disney's Art of Animation Resort

Step into some of your favorite stories! Each one of the Disney's Art of Animation Resort buildings are being designed to make you feel like you are part of the animated films.

The 864 rooms planned within The Little Mermaid buildings will be sea-inspired with an eye towards value. An interesting note, King Triton seen in the image above was originally desined to be the focal point of The Living Seas Pavilion in Epcot. The design was later scrapped but we see him return here. As they say in Disney Imagineering, no good idea ever goes away.

The Lion King, Cars and Finding Nemo buildings are planned to exclusively feature family suites which accommodate up to six guests. The concepts show a total of 1,120 family suites—all arranged for added space and comfort.

The concept for these family suites include:

A master bedroom

3 separate sleeping areas within the living space, which includes an "Inovabed"—an impressive piece of furniture that transforms from a generously sized dining or work table to a comfortable bed in seconds.

A Look at the New Fantasyland at Walt Disney World

First, work is already well underway on many of the experiences I've already told you about, so let’s start with Under the Sea: Journey of The Little Mermaid. In this attraction, Ariel and all her friends will entertain you in a ride-through adventure featuring favorite songs from the popular animated feature.

Beast's Castle
Construction on Beast’s Castle is already underway which stands majestically upon a hill. You will cross over a stone bridge as you arrive at Be Our Guest Restaurant. Set in the halls of the Beast’s Castle, this location will seat up to 550 guests and offer “great food fast” service by day and full table service dining in the evening. Looking through the false windows, guests will be able to see it snowing.

Just outside the restaurant, you will also be able to explore Belle’s Village, which includes Gaston’s Tavern and Bonjour! Village Gifts. This will be the primary merchandise location inside Fantasyland.

Enchanted Tales with Belle
Nearby at Belle’s cottage, a magical mirror is the doorway to a new experience, where Belle, Lumiere and guests participate in a lively re-telling of the “tale as old as time.” In Enchanted Tales with Belle, the adventure begins at Maurice’s cottage, where you’ll step through an enchanted mirror that magically transports you to Beast’s library for an interactive storytelling session with Belle.

Storybook Circus & Dumbo
Just across the way is the brand new Storybook Circus, where another carousel to Dumbo the Flying Elephant will be built. Parents will be given a number to ride Dumbo and can allow their children to play while they wait. No more waiting in the hot sun!

Alongside Dumbo the Flying Elephant, the existing Barnstormer is getting a new look as well, featuring Goofy as The Great Goofini. This exciting attraction will take you on a twisting, turning, daredevil, roller coaster “flight” high above the circus fun.

The Seven Dwarf's Mine Train
Much like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, this train will take you on a rollicking, musical ride into the mine “where a million diamonds shine.” The coaster will feature a first-of-its kind ride system with a train of ride vehicles that swing back and forth as they whisk along the track. The journey will be accompanied by music from the classic Disney film and animated figures of Snow White and the Dwarfs.

A New Home for the Disney Princesses
By now you might have heard that Snow White's Scary Adventures is being taken down. This space will now be used for a Princess meet and greet attraction. The all new Princess Fairytale Hall will feature Aurora, Cinderella and other Disney princesses, such as Tiana and Rapunzel. Each will greet you in an elegant royal court.

Each policy is different, so check with your auto policy and credit card for specific details.

Gasoline Games
Not returning the car with a full tank can cost you as much as $6 a gallon. You might be offered an option to prepay for a full tank of gas. There is often debate over the best seat on a roller coaster, the front or the rear. Perhaps the reason so many people can't agree is because it actually depends on the coaster and the type of thrill they are seeking.

The Stuff Coasters are Made of:

One of the key ingredients that goes into a thrilling roller coaster is the g-force sensation. The more g’s the coaster pulls, the more sensations riders experience. In general, most Disney coasters are designed to pull about 3 g’s but other theme parks have coasters that pull as much as 6. Did you know that 10 g’s is considered deadly? Or that the average sneeze creates about 3 g’s? What makes a coaster exciting are the sensations it creates. Typically there are two sensations: the feeling of being weightless and the feeling of weighing more. These sensations are obtained by the various corners, drops, and inversions but all are born from g-forces. Disney’s Imagineers carefully plan where riders will feel these sensations as they deliver the sense of thrill to guests.

The “G” in G-Force

In short, the “g” in “g-force” refers to the force of gravity an object experiences while in motion, especially during acceleration. If this sounds a bit like rocket science, it is! g forces are studied by those in astrophysics and yes, by Disney Imagineers who are designing coasters.

Some of the best coasters are those that deliver the most g’s and knowing where to sit optimizes your g-force experience. No two Disney World coasters are alike however, so, let’s take a closer look.

Rock n Roller Coaster in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Sit in the front. Not only is it a really cool view, but right after the linear induction launch, the train hits the first inversion. The front of the train is going faster as it climbs the hill but begins to slow down immediately after that. The rear of the train will be going much slower than the front by the time it gets to the same point and thus, riders experience less g’s. So for the most g-forces, take a front row seat.

Expedition Everest in Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Sit in the rear. In the middle of the attraction you'll experience one of the biggest drops. The rear of the train will be moving much faster than the front of the train as it gets pulled over the hill. This is also true for the sharp curves that follow the big drop because gravity pulls everything down at an accelerated rate - so the rear gets the most g-forces.

Space Mountain in Magic Kingdom Park

Sit in the middle! Row 3 is the best for g-forces because it’s a long car and guests are actually sitting behind the wheel base. As the train goes over each hill, there’s a teeter totter effect. When going over a hill, the back of the train actually goes up, and then suddenly comes down. In the dark, you can’t see where you going so it’s hard to predict when these experiences are going to occur. This constant moving up and down is a classic experience of weightlessness and heaviness, two effects of g-forces.

Rear of the train. Big Thunder's thrills come from its the sharp turns and speed but it has mild hills. As the front of the train crests the hill, it's actually held back by the rear of the train that is still climbing up. Once the last car makes it over the top, the train accelerates like a sling shot down the hill. This rapid acceleration is what creates the g-force.

For more thrills on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, ride later in the day. As the wheel grease warms up, the trains go faster.

Some might argue that the view front he coaster adds to the thrill, and they’re right. Sitting in the rear of the train on Expedition Everest will forfeit your chance to see the amazing view of Walt Disney World from the top of the mountain. So ride these attractions again and again and choose different seats for different experiences. Sometimes, its not even where you sit, it’s who you’re sitting with. Have fun out there.

Baby Care centers are "service centers" for small children. Inside you'll find changing tables, private breastfeeding rooms, rocking chairs, high chairs, and waiting rooms for others in your party.

There are also necessities for sale such as diapers, pacifiers, bottles, baby Tylenol, Gerber foods, and snacks. Disney does charge a nominal fee for these products but use of center itself is free.

Baby Care Center Locations:

Magic Kingdom: Next to the Crystal Palace Restaurant near Main Street USA.

Epcot: Odyssey Center - between Future World and World Showcase (BEST)

Disney's Hollywood Studios: Just inside the main entrance.

Disney's Animal Kingdom: Near the Tree of Life (on the left side from the entrance)

While all Baby Care centers were good during our visits, we felt the Epcot location was the best. It was less crowded and well stocked with supplies.

Most bathrooms around Walt Disney World theme parks also have changing tables if you are unable to make it to a Baby Care Center. You might also want to read your guide map for companion restroom locations as well.

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort

Horse-drawn wagon rides depart from Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort Pioneer Hall at 7 and 9:30 p.m. nightly. No reservation required. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Plan. Consider using a fee-free agency that specializes in Disney vacations like Magical Vacations Travel. An Authorized Disney Vacation Planner can walk you through everything you need to know when you get there. Most agencies are completely free to you.

Let everyone have a say. Make sure everyone has a chance to share their own "must see" attractions and be sure to include them in your itinerary.

Reserve your dining: You also want to plan ahead for dining reservations. It can be difficult to think about where to dine months in advance but it's a must! You don't have to plan every meal, but make reservations for the restaurants you must try as far out as 6 months in advance. Call 1-407-WDW-DINE for assistance.

Keep it simple. Walt Disney World Resort has enough fun for 10 vacations. Keep it simple.

Don't over-schedule. Based on your research and the recommendations of friends and family, decide on a few "must-do" adventures and leave the rest of the time for discovery and surprises.

Use a Guide Map. Upon entering each park, pick up a free Walt Disney World guide map and an entertainment schedule. They are usually available in racks at the park entrances and at retail locations. Use them to help plan your tour of the parks and to find out show/parade times.

Be flexible. Be prepared to make fun out of the unexpected. The most memorable moments at WDW come from those small moments that you can't plan for, such as a character greeting or discovering a winding path and following it to see where it goes. You won't be able to plan for these moments and remember, it's perfectly alright to adjust your itinerary as needed.

Take a break. One of the benefits of staying at a Disney resort is that they all have terrific themed swimming pools. During busy vacation times, many guests take a mid-day break from the theme parks and treat the kids to a swim. Or a nap. If leaving the park is not an option, plan to see shows and parades. Find a restaurant, even if you only want a snack. Look for air conditioned buildings too.

Arrive Early. Parades, stage shows, and fireworks, are extremely popular and guests will begin staking out their spots 30-40 minutes prior. Arriving early, take a break and maybe have a snack.

Stay on property. Walt Disney World Resort offers a variety of accommodations to meet guests' vacation budgets. The Disney hotels are convenient to theme parks, provide the assurance of Disney-caliber service and include benefits such as exclusive time
in the theme parks -- up to 16 "Extra Magic Hours" each week.

Plan to spend a minimum of three nights. Vacationers are drawn to Walt Disney World Resort for its four theme parks. The four parks are very different experiences. Each is worth a visit. Don't plan to do more than 2 parks in one day. Three parks in one day is possible but at a grueling pace. Many guests will choose one park in the morning and one in the evening, with an afternoon break at the hotel.

Customize your tickets. With Disney's "Magic Your Way," you decide how many days you want to go to the theme parks. You decide if you want to park hop -- that is, visit more than one park on a day. You decide if you want to go to attractions outside the theme parks -- such as the Disney water parks. And longer stays mean savings per day on tickets. Admission prices increase only a couple of dollars after day 4, so you're main expense will be your hotel room.

Use Disney transportation. Disney-veteran vacationers may know the "quick way" to the fun using personal transportation. But for first-timers, use Disney buses, monorails and watercraft. They are care-free. Those rides can be part of the fun. When using Disney transportation, plan on you're trip lasting about 30 minutes or so to get to your destination. Remember, WDW is over 43 square miles!

Many of the apps tested offered information that was available through the Disney World website. With apps that have both, free and paid versions, the free versions worked just as well but you might have a small advertisement.

Before purchasing an app, look to see if the information is first available on the Disney’s website. If it is, you can simply bookmark that page on your phone and create a “home screen button” for speedy access.

Wait Time apps are by far the most desirable. People want to know how long the lines are before they head over to an attraction. In testing, only two apps are recommended. Lines, the companion app to TouringPlans.com is the best for predicting wait times. In a recent test, wait times were within 5 minutes of the actual posted time. Mouse World Radio is a true work of genius. When the app first came out, it often crashed but that problem has been solved. We liked that it displays the current track title and that it allows for adjustable volume right on the screen. Now we just need Mouse World to develop an all-instrumental version.

The Disney World Dining app was very easy to navigate and much easier to use than going online with your phone. Of course, you shouldn’t wait until you get to Disney World to start doing your research on restaurants, but if you need some last minute help, this app is recommended.

Walt Disney World Secrets Gold is a fun app for Disney World fans. It’s offers design secrets, little surprises in the parks, and where to find some Hidden Mickeys. We like that it comes with digital images of the topics being discussed, it makes it easier to find all the hidden details. This app is especially fun in the Magic Kingdom because there is so much to be discovered there, but it’s not as informative in the other parks. In Epcot, it primarily talks about the use of “forced perspective” to make buildings appear larger. After a while, this gets old and there are plenty of other things to point out. Still, it was fun to use in the parks.

New Downtown Disney Coming to Walt Disney World Resort

Walt Disney World announced plans for a revised Downtown Disney, a 120-acre retail, dining and entertainment complex on the eastern edge of Disney's Florida property.

According to the official Disney Parks Blog, the renovated section will be called Hyperion Wharf, and will be a "nostalgic yet modern take on an early 20th century port city and amusement pier."

Hyperion Wharf will be located in an area formerly called Pleasure Island. This isn't the first revision to the area but it will certainly be the most comprehensive. Disney began closing its failing nightclub and shopping district throughout Pleasure Island back in 2008 due to revenue loss, a sudden increase in crime and public indecency among some guests. Rumors began spreading among Disney World fans that there would be a massive overhaul but this is the first official announcement from the Walt Disney Company regarding the changes.

Along with the new wharf district, other projects are underway at Downtown Disney, including:

An 3,500 sq. ft. expansion and renovation of Lego Imagination Center,
Enhancements at AMC Theatres with new digital technology, a Concession Stand of the Future and Florida’s first Fork & Screen Theater;
Numerous new or renovated retail shops, as well as additional atmosphere entertainment.

Construction on the new district has begun, and Hyperion Wharf will be completed in 2013 according to Disney.

Look closely and you’ll see that Pleasure Island will evolve into a vibrant waterfront district called “Hyperion Wharf.”

The district will come to life with a nostalgic yet modern take on an early 20th century port city and amusement pier. By day, stylish boutiques and innovative restaurants will draw you in and by night, thousands of lights will transform the area into an electric wonderland.

Taking its name from Hyperion, the Greek god of light, as well as the street on which Walt Disney built his first major animation studio, the wharf district will also feature a relaxing lakeside park and enhanced pedestrian walkways. And its diverse eateries will expand dining availability at Downtown Disney by more than 25 percent.

Downtown Disney has had some big failures over the years and smaller attempts to revise and update the area eventually failed. Many criticized Disney for trying to build an adult-themed area inside a family-based resort. Disney maintained that they needed a nightlife area to attract adults vacationing without kids and locals. This will be the first comprehensive retooling of Downtown Disney, one that appears to be more family-friendly.

Guide to Bringing Infants to Walt Disney World

Be prepared for the sun, not so much the heat.
Direct sun will actually be your biggest problem, not so much the heat. Even strollers that come with sunshades will need additional protection from the sun at certain angles. One tip is to bring a white towel from your hotel room to draJust remember to remove the towel when in shaded areas so the baby can have a look around.

Take breaks in air conditioned buildings
Anytime you have the opportunity to walk into a shop with air conditioning, go for it. Five or ten minutes in the AC gives everyone a recharge but it's going to be absolutely necessary for the baby during the warmer months.

Avoid Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom during the day.
The Magic Kingdom is extremely infant-friendly. Use the shops on Main Street to keep cool and make use of the Baby Care Center - it's fantastic! Epcot offers many places to cool down too. Use Mouse Gear and the Electric Umbrella REstaurant while others in your party ride Mission: SPACE and Test Track.

Animal Kingdom has little to no air conditioned buildings and I would caution anyone planning to visit this park during the daytime. It's also far from most hotels. Leave this one for when baby is older.

Hollywood Studios has limited air condition buildings and they are difficult to find outside of Sunset Blvd. area. If possible, avoid during the day as well.

Use Baby Swap (aka Rider Switch Pass) Whenever Possible
This allows one person to wait with the baby while another rides an attraction. When it's time to switch, the second person doesn't have to wait in the stand-by line, they can use the FASTPASS entrance. Up to three people can enter on one Baby Swap ticket. Just ask any Cast Member outside the attraction for a Baby Swap ticket. Note, this is only offered on attractions that offer FASTPASS.

Bring Someone that Can Help with the Baby
If you can bring grandma or grandpa or any other adult that can help look after the baby, you'd be better off. Not only is it great to have some extra help, but you'll have someone to ride the attractions with, rather than having to go alone. Mom and dad might have a chance to sneak out to a park for a few hours on their own too!

Have a Plan, but be Flexible
Of course, you need to have a rough draft of an itinerary, but don't worry if things don't work out as planned. Most importantly, if you think the baby has had enough, head back to your hotel for a break, and plan to return later on. Forcing your way through an itinerary is a common mistake, and it could end up ruining your vacation. See my page for tips for first time guests to Walt Disney World.

Use the Baby Care Centers
These are the best things since sliced bread! Use them often. Each center offers changing rooms, waiting rooms, kitchens, and Cast Members who are there to assist you with anything you need. Best Ways to Get Infant Gear to Walt Disney World

Even though I have been preparing for our trip for months, I just now started to lay out all the baby supplies on our dining room table. Now that I'm gathering everything in one place, I see that it's much more than I had imagined. I still like the idea of shipping some items down ahead of time, but I discovered a new way that might work better for some folks.

I stopped at the post office today to pick up some flat rate boxes figuring it would be cheaper to mail the baby's gear. jetBlue charges $20 for extra bags, and additional fees if any of them are overweight. $20 did not seem that expensive to me when I saw the actual size of the flat rate box. When I got to the post office, I did the math and realized that it would be better to just pay jetBlue the $20 fee ($40 round trip) and just bring an extra piece of luggage. I would have needed two flat rate boxes which ship for about $16 each. That's $32 for two boxes versus $40 for the extra luggage. Best of all Disney's Magical Express will even handle it for me.

So paying the extra bag fee is a practical solution, but I thought about it more and found an even better way that won't cost any extra money. I figured out that if I pack my own things in a carry on bag, and use my checked bag for all baby gear, then there are no extra bags, thus no extra fees. I probably won't fill the checked bag with baby stuff, so I can use any extra room for more of my stuff. This actually saves me from paying any additional baggage fees at all, provided they are under 50lbs.

Of course, coming home means the bag will be mostly empty as the diapers and formula will have been used. I suppose this leaves more room for all the souvenirs my wife will buy.

Before heading down to Walt Disney World with an infant, it's a great idea to figure out where the diaper changing and feedings will take place. Disney provides Baby Care Centers in each of the 4 parks but it might also be nice to find your own quiet spot - yes they do exist.

Disney's Baby Care Centers:
Each of the centers offer diapers, medicine, wipes, change of clothes, teething rings, formula, and bottles. Most items are not free but reasonably priced considering your in a theme park, and not Target or Costco. They also have nursing rooms with rocking chairs, and a place for toddlers to play while mom tends to the baby. It's important to note that many restrooms, both male and female, have changing tables as well.

Walt Disney World with an Infant: Rent a Car or use Disney Transport?

In my last post I shared that we selected Disney's Polynesian Resort for convenience. From the Polynesian we can get to 50% of Disney's theme parks by monorail which makes things so much easier. But I've stayed at the Polynesian before and I know that having to rely on Disney buses for the other parks, can be a challenge. Buses make several stops along the way adding to the time it takes to get back to the resort. Last summer, we were on the bus back to the Polynesian from Blizzard Beach and it took almost 2 hours. We stopped at all 3 Downtown Disney locations, and the Contemporary Resort. While at Downtown Disney, the driver waited about 15 minutes before pulling out. I can't imagine experiencing that with a infant who needs to eat or be changed.

To Rent a Car or Not?

For this trip, I decided to rent a car just so I have a home base with us at the parks. My wife and I can load up the car, drive it to Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, and have everything we need in case of a problem. Plus, we won't have to carry everything with us. Think using the stroller to carry all your items is a good idea? It can be until you try boarding a bus - the stroller will need to be folded up. By having the rental car, I can bring my own baby care center with me and also drive right back to the resort if I need to.

We decided not to rent a car for the first 2 days of our trip because we will be visiting the Magic Kingdom and Epcot. We can use the monorail and our hotel will be close by.

Try Alamo - Official Car Rental Agency of Walt Disney World

We reserved a car at Alamo, located right down the street from the Polynesian at the Car Care Center. They provide free shuttle service to Disney resort hotels. I've used them many times before and find their rates to be very competitive. For this trip, I booked through Costco and got a 20% discount. For 3 days, I paid about $150 for a mid-size car. Best of all, I'm taking it back to the airport so I'm not stuck waiting for the Magical Express to arrive at my hotel. Another good place to check for discounts is MouseSavers.com

Don't Forget your Car Seat

Of course, if you rent a car, you'll need to bring all your safety gear. Most car rental agencies provide car seats for a fee, typically about $10/day. I was uncomfortable renting one though, kids tend make messes in car seats and I can't be sure how well they are cleaned. I called our airline and asked about their policy on strollers and car seats. jetBlue advised me that it would not be a problem but to gate-check them rather than check them in at the ticket counter. "Baggage handlers tend to be rough on strollers and car seats and sometimes they come back with broken wheels or handles," I was told.

Most airlines will allow parents with small children to board first primarily because they know the strollers and car seats will need to be put under the plane. Car seats are not allowed in the aircraft cabin. When it's time to get off the plane, the strollers are usually right there on the JetWay waiting for you. That's pretty convenient.

I think the best reason for renting a car is to have the ability to make a quick escape from the parks if there is a problem with our infant. Having to wait for the bus to arrive, then wait for it to make stops might make for an unpleasant experience. It's also nice to be able to load up the trunk with baby gear and not have to store everything in the stroller, which would have to all come out when getting on the bus.

Infant-Friendly Hotels at Walt Disney World

When planning to bring an infant to Walt Disney World, it's important to decide on a resort hotel that fits your budget and your needs. For us, it was Disney's Polynesian Resort but there are a few others that would have worked well too.

We received a special rate through Magical Vacations Travel (yes, I do work for them, I but even with all the perks I get from Disney, I could not beat this offer). We received a large discount on the room and a great ticket package. The Polynesian Resort is the most convenient Disney resort, not just because it's close to the Magic Kingdom, but it's also on the monorail. It's also within walking distance to the Epcot monorail so we can travel to two of the four parks right from our hotel.

Another reason the Polynesian seems to work best for us is that it's close to the Car Care Center where I can rent a car from Alamo. I'll go into why a rental car is a good idea in a future post.

I don't think our son will have a preference as to which park we visit most often, but I plan to visit the Magic Kingdom most often. With that in mind, staying at the Polynesian will allow us to return quickly to the hotel in case of a melt down, thunderstorm, or anything else that requires us to leave in a hurry.

Remember Pal Mickey? He was the GPS enabled plush toy that guests could purchase or rent at Walt Disney World. While walking around the parks, Pal Mickey would point out things of interests, give updates on where characters could be found etc.

Pal Mickey, is now a thing of the past and a new age of in-park technology is being ushered in. While there are a number of iPhone apps for Walt Disney World, few are actually "must haves." Most are based on theme park maps with GPS capability. The maps that Disney hands out for free are just as good. Others offer dining options but once again, you'll be able to find plenty of places to dine right on the park map, free.

The mobile app that scored the best was "Lines" availabe on any web enabled mobile phone. Let's take a closer look at Lines and 2 other honorable mentions.

Liberty Tree Tavern Magic Kingdom Park
This authentic New England themed restaurant serves up turkey dinners all year long. The food is generally good, nothing surprising about comfort food, but you’ll find it hard to believe your in a theme park and not a local tavern somewhere in Massachusetts. The restaurant is a re-creation of an 18th century American inn, with six small dining rooms with Colonial artifacts.

Diamond Horseshoe Review: Magic Kingdom Park
When Liberty Tree Tavern fills up, Disney occasionally opens Diamond Horseshoe. It’s the same menu as Liberty Tree, same kitchen too. The old stage show featuring can-can dancers is long gone but Disney fans can reminisce. Make a reservation at the podium and you’re chances of actually getting a table are quite good. Just be prepared for a noisy environment and tables that are squished together.

The Best Photos: Arrive Early

I have so many photos of Walt Disney World that I can't even tell when they were taken anymore. The few times that I didn't bring a camera, something remarkable happened and I was furious. Like the time I was on Splash Mountain and it was evacuated. Or the time the door was left opened to the Veranda Cafe in Adventureland by maintenance workers. It was a rare sight since the cafe had been closed for several years. Always bring your camera, even if your a veteran Walt Disney World visitor.

If you're tired of the same photos, make note that some of the best photos that you can take at Walt Disney World are those that are unique.

One way to get rare/unusual photos is to make advanced dining reservations or special tours that begin prior to park opening. For example, if the Magic Kingdom doesn't open until 9 a.m., then make a reservation for Crystal Palace for 8:30a. You'll be granted special access at the turnstiles while everyone else is waiting. Once inside, you'll be able to take plenty of photos without anyone else in them.

The same is true for tours. Many tours, like the Simply Segway Tour at Epcot, are offered before the parks opens. Be sure to arrive 15-20 minutes before your ADR or tour reservation so you have time to take some photos.

I love photos of Walt Disney World with no one else in them because they are so rare. It also makes you feel like a VIP, for a little while. I should note that Walt Disney didn't like pictures of Disneyland taken before the guests arrived. He felt that people gave the park life. While I agree to some extent, I also think having people in the photos can distract us from aprrecaiting the fine details.

Feel free to walk through the lobbies, have a seat, or even take walk outside to see the grounds.

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

Although this one is a bit out of the way, it is definitely worth the trip. Pay particular attention to the hand-carved wood and leather furnishings, imported woods and the faint smells of a wood fired oven. The finest, authentic African architecture and design will leave you feeling like your in Africa and not central Florida. The spectacular theme immerses guests in an environment inspired by the picturesque beauty of an African wildlife reserve. Cultural representatives from Africa are on hand to point out the many displays and hidden details throughout the lobby. Best of all, there are plenty of quiet areas that allow visitors to step outside onto balconies overlooking the breathtaking savannahs where more than 200 animals roam.

Disney's Wilderness Lodge

From the moment you enter, music from old western movies surrounds you in the main lobby. The music makes the lobby feel as expansive as the wide-open prairies of the old west, as depicted in classic movies. A grand, log-framed main lobby with soaring six-story-high bundled log columns help support roof dormers high overhead. Multicolored wood and stone floors below show incredible detail. Four massive chandeliers with torch-cut scenes of Indians and buffalo, topped with glowing teepees, are the centerpiece lobby along with two 55-foot-tall handcarved totem poles -- the "eagle" and "raven" -- were inspired by Northwest Indians. Head out back for a volcanic meadow with babbling brooks and geysers shooting misty streams up to 100 feet into the air. Or better yet, arrive after dark to explore the winding paths around the courtyard softly lit by rustic lanterns. Visit during the holiday season to see some of the best resort decorations anywhere at Walt Disney World.

A majestic, 82-foot-tall, three-sided stone fireplace re-creates a 2-billion-year geological record of the earth with fossilized remains of prehistoric animal and plant life. Colorful rock strata layers are re-created in the proportions they occur in the Grand Canyon.

Like all deluxe resorts at Disney, there is incredible attention to detail. Elaborate trim work around the ceilings and floors, large murals depicting the the golden age of boardwalk entertainment, and artifacts from an era gone by. In fact, the artifacts include an authentic miniature carousel designed in the 1920s by premier carousel craftsman M.C. Illions as well as a vintage scale model of the Flip Flap, the
world's first loop-the-loop roller coaster. Take a rest in the Bellevue Lounge in the large couches surrounded by bookshelves loaded with period toys and books. Head outside to the Boardwalk, almost a theme park in itself.

Disney's Grand Floridian is yet another resort set during the turn-of-the century. Enter from the Monorail platform, something that seems odd since you're taken back to the year 1900, but somehow it works. From the second floor, take a moment to look down at the bustling lobby below. The antique-style bird cage elevator, the detailed carpeting, and the grand piano which is often being played. If you have time, catch the Grand Floridian Society Orchestra play on stage situated on the second floor balcony over the main lobby. They play big band era music as well as some Disney classics.
During the holiday season, the lobby is home to a real gingerbread house and one of 7 very tall, Icon Christmas trees.
